Its primary goal is to integrate neuroscience and cognitive training into rugby practice, strengthening the brain-body connection. Coaches will learn to develop key skills in their players, such as attention, working memory, mental flexibility, and anticipation. The course also emphasizes stress management, adaptability, and quick reaction times. Through innovative exercises combining physical and cognitive challenges, participants will discover how to stimulate lasting neural changes. They will gain tools to prepare their athletes to excel under pressure, adapt to dynamic environments, and maximize their potential on the field.

An Innovative and Unique Method

The Catch + Think method is innovative and unique because it combines physical and cognitive training in an unprecedented way to maximize athletic performance. Unlike traditional approaches that focus solely on the body, this method integrates neuroscientific principles to stimulate neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize and create new neural connections. By pairing physical movements with cognitive challenges, it pushes athletes out of their comfort zones, enhancing their ability to process information, make quick decisions, and adapt to unpredictable situations.

Each exercise is designed to simultaneously engage multiple brain functions, such as attention, working memory, mental flexibility, and anticipation. The Catch + Think balls, with their colors and pictograms linked to specific actions, require players to analyze, plan, and execute actions in real time. This multitasking approach not only improves reflexes and coordination but also boosts focus and mental resilience.

With progressively challenging levels, the method adapts to all profiles, from beginners to elite athletes, delivering measurable results in reaction speed, accuracy, and decision-making. It transforms training into a comprehensive experience where the brain and body work in perfect synergy, making athletes more effective, strategic, and confident on the field.

Brian Liebenberg

Your Coach

Originally from South Africa, Brian became a professional rugby player at the age of 18. After spending a year in Piacenza, Italy, he joined Rugby Club de Grenoble for two years before moving to the capital to play for Stade Français, where he remained for 10 years. During his career, he won the French Championship three times. In 2003, he reached the World Cup semi-finals with the French national team and achieved a Grand Slam in the 6 Nations Tournament, in addition to being a European Cup finalist. He earned 12 international caps. In 2011, he ended his professional career due to an injury. Eager to share his accumulated knowledge, he underwent training, specifically focusing on attention, with researcher Jean-Philippe Lachaux. This led to the birth of the "Catch + Think" concept. Today, his concept is widely adopted across various fields such as healthcare, sports, education, and business. Brian and his team train healthcare professionals, educators, athletes, and managers. Additionally, he works as a corporate consultant and certified mental coach.

Hear from the Experts: Reviews That Make a Difference

“The Catch + Think method is a great accelerator and support for teaching the key fundamentals of catching and passing. It's especially great for youth players and those in rehab. I highly recommend it. The method was implemented at a high-performance camp in Chiba for the Japanese U23 team. It is also used for morning activation sessions with the men's national team at their training facility in Tokyo.”

“When we understand the importance of attention and its necessity in our daily tasks, when we know that it determines how we learn, when it’s proven that it allows us to focus briefly or for extended periods on the most important information, and when it has been demonstrated that we can improve our attention through a tailored cognitive training program… we can only applaud Brian’s initiative. Through the Catch + Think concept, he has successfully combined motor skills with the activation of different forms of attention to help learners develop new problem-solving strategies. Congratulations on this excellent initiative and its wide-ranging applications in education, sports, healthcare, and even in the corporate world!!! ”

“As a former rugby player and coach of the French national team, I’ve seen firsthand that this sport demands not only physical abilities but also quick decision-making under pressure. When I tested the Catch + Think method during a youth training camp, I was impressed by how it developed players’ cognitive skills—helping them anticipate, adapt, and execute with precision. At the international level, where split-second decisions can define a game, this type of cognitive training is invaluable. Catch + Think bridges the gap between physical and mental preparation, equipping players to think faster and play smarter. It’s truly a game-changer for rugby at all levels.”

The Questions We All Ask

  • Why Incorporate the Catch + Think Method into Your Rugby Training?

Modern rugby demands more than just physical strength; it requires superior game intelligence. Our innovative approach combines cognitive challenges with physical exercises, creating sharper, smarter players. By enhancing decision-making, focus, and reaction times, we prepare your athletes to perform under pressure. The Catch + Think method builds the mental resilience and adaptability needed to excel in unpredictable game scenarios. It sharpens minds to create well-rounded players. Give your team the decisive edge: the ability to think faster and play smarter.

  • How Does the Catch + Think Method Optimize Rugby Performance?

Rugby is a sport where physical power and endurance reign supreme, right? But what if the key to victory also lies in mental speed? In a game as complex and dynamic as rugby, the ability to think faster than your opponent is a decisive advantage. The Catch + Think method is designed for just that: unlocking your players’ potential by optimizing both their bodies and their minds. This unique approach combines physical training with cognitive challenges to create more well-rounded athletes. By strengthening the brain-body connection, we help players make better decisions, react faster, and adapt to the unpredictability of the game.

  • What Is the Dual Focus Offered by the Catch + Think Method?

Athletic performance isn't just about strength or speed. It relies on the brain's ability to analyze, decide, and act in a split second. The Catch + Think method recognizes this synergy and integrates cognitive challenges directly into physical exercises. Imagine a player catching a ball. With Catch + Think, they don't just secure the ball; they must simultaneously identify a color or symbol on it and perform a specific associated action. This dual-task training forces the brain to process multiple pieces of information at once, just like in a real game. This process strengthens neural pathways, making decisions faster and almost instinctive under pressure. By adding this complexity to training, we prepare players for a level of demand that is higher than what they'll face in a game. On game day, the play will seem slower and clearer, giving them the feeling of always being one step ahead.

  • Why Improve Decision-Making and Reaction Time?

On a rugby field, every second counts. A hesitant decision can cost a try, while a quick reaction can create a decisive opportunity. How does the Catch + Think method sharpen these crucial skills? The human brain operates in a natural cycle: receiving information, analyzing it, deciding, and acting. The faster this cycle, the better the player performs. Catch + Think exercises are designed to speed up this process. By forcing players to react to unpredictable visual stimuli (the color under their thumb) while performing a technical movement, we train their brain to: Analyze faster: The brain learns to filter out distractions and focus on relevant information. Decide more quickly: Repetition of complex scenarios strengthens working memory and executive functions. Act with precision: The connection between mental decision-making and physical action becomes more fluid and automatic. The result? Players who don’t just react to what’s happening but anticipate and control the game. They spot gaps in the defense faster, make the right pass under pressure, and adapt instantly to the opponent’s changing strategies.

  • Why Does Our Method Help Develop Mental Resilience and Adaptability?

Rugby is a game of errors and pressure. The ability to stay calm, recover from a mistake, and adapt to a changing situation is what separates good players from great ones. This is called mental resilience. The Catch + Think method builds this mental strength in several ways: Stress management: By simulating high-pressure situations in training, players get used to performing under a high cognitive load. The stress of the game then becomes easier to manage. Cognitive flexibility: The drills require constantly switching from one task to another (catching, analyzing, deciding, moving). These mental gymnastics develop the ability to change strategies during a game without losing effectiveness. Sustained concentration: Players learn to maintain their focus for extended periods, even when physically tired. This reduces the careless errors that can be costly late in a match. A player who has trained their cognitive flexibility is an invaluable asset. They can switch from an offensive game plan to a defensive posture in an instant, adjust to an unexpected opponent's tactic, and find creative solutions in the chaos of the game..

  • Why Develop an Efficient Brain for a Resilient Player?

Did you know that while your brain accounts for only 2% of your body weight, it consumes about 20% of your energy? In a sport as demanding as rugby, managing this energy is fundamental. A trained brain is a more efficient brain. By strengthening neural connections, cognitive training allows the brain to use fewer resources to accomplish the same tasks. Decisions become less taxing on mental energy. This efficiency translates directly onto the field: Less mental fatigue: Players stay sharp longer, even in the final, crucial minutes of a match. Better resource management: The energy saved by the brain remains available for physical exertion. Consistent performance: Cognitive efficiency helps maintain a high level of performance from kickoff to the final whistle. Ultimately, a cognitively trained player possesses more endurance—not just physically, but mentally. They can maintain focus, precision, and decision quality even when their opponents begin to falter.

  • Why Prepare Your Players for the Unpredictable?

The Catch + Think method is more than just another drill to add to your training routine. It's a philosophy that recognizes the modern rugby player must be a complete athlete—physically powerful and mentally brilliant. By integrating this dual approach, you aren't just preparing your players for the next match; you're equipping them with the tools to adapt, innovate, and excel in any scenario. Train the mind, and you will train the whole player. Give your team the cognitive edge they need to dominate on the field.
